Cyberpunk 2077 is getting a surprise update, but it won’t add a new game plus

Just a few months after CD Projekt Red announced the update was complete. Cyberpunk 2077, the studio is preparing another one Cyberpunk 2077 update. Details about the patch will be revealed during a special livestream on December 10th.

Although we don’t know what exactly yet Cyberpunk 2077 Update 2.2 will include CD Projekt Red Global Community Director Marcin Momot detailing PlayStation 5 Pro support and the new game, as well as how it won’t be in the plans. If the responses to the update announcement are any indication, these are two of the most requested features in the four-year-old game, so it will be interesting to see what CD Projekt Red prioritizes instead.

This news came as a shock to many. CD Projekt Red was previously treated Cyberpunk 2077 Update 2.1 was the last major update—updates 2.11 and 2.12 focused primarily on bug fixes and polish—and the company’s Q1 2024 earnings report noted that as of April 30, all members of the development team had moved on to other projects.

Cyberpunk 2077 launched in 2020 as a mess. CD Projekt Red has, however, greatly improved the experience with fixes, updates, and Phantom Freedom extension. Today, the game is arguably a worthy successor to the legacy and community goodwill that the Polish studio has built through its witcher franchise. A sequel, codenamed Project Orion, is currently in development despite CD Projekt Red’s significant staff cuts in 2023.

“To meet our high expectations and ambitions to create the best role-playing games, we want to have not only the best people, but also the right teams,” CEO Adam Kiciński said at the time. “By this we mean having teams tailored to the needs of our projects; more flexible and effective teams. At this point, we believe that for CD Projekt Red to grow, we need to be consistent in implementing this approach.”
