Epic Games will pay hundreds of thousands of Fortnite players $100

The Federal Trade Commission is forcing Fortnite Creator Epic Games will pay out more than $72 million in refunds to about 629,000 customers on Monday. Each victim will receive about $114 from the Federal Trade Commission if they successfully file a claim. The payouts follow a 2022 settlement in which the federal agency said Epic Games “defrauded” users into spending money on the platform.

Refunds will be issued on Monday and represent the first round of payments. The FTC statement said the agency would “provide additional money at a later date,” but did not provide any additional details. The government will send money by checks and PayPal. The FTC said recipients should repay the PayPal payment within 30 days and cash their checks within 90 days, and those with additional questions should contact the return administrator listed in the FTC announcement.

The payments follow a 2022 settlement in which the Federal Trade Commission received $520 million after it said Fortnite violated the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act and “used design tricks known as dark patterns to trick millions of players into making unintended purchases.” This set of payouts applies to those who fall into the second category of arguments and accidentally made a purchase while playing due to the game’s duplicitous design.

If you think you may have made an accidental purchase at FortniteIt’s not too late to get your money back. Those who suspect they have been affected can file a claim online today.
