Borderlands 4, Mafia: The Old Country Lead as New Game Awards Shows Confirmed

With The Game Awards 2024 just a few days away, developers are taking the opportunity to send fans into a frenzy by declaring early on that yes, their games will be showing up – with showings of both Mafia: The Old Country and Borderlands 4 now officially confirmed.

The gritty mafia story Mafia: The Old Country, set in the violent underworld of 1900s Sicily, was announced earlier this year, and developer Hangar 13 has now appeared on social media with the simple message “See you at The Game Awards!” This fourth installment in the series is due out next year, so the timing makes sense for a more substantial look beyond the initial teaser trailer.

As for Borderlands 4, Gearbox boss Randy Pitchford has been talking excitedly about it since its reveal back in August. And now he’s appeared to tease the shooter’s upcoming appearance at the Game Awards. “Guys, this is happening!” — he wrote on social networks. “I’ll be at The Game Awards with the new Borderlands 4 trailer. I can’t wait!”

“Yes, there is a GAME in the trailer!” Pitchford continued. “Also, in addition to lots of game footage, I’ll be sharing a sickening, never-before-seen original cinematic sequence depicting a moment that occurs roughly halfway between the end of Borderlands 3 and the beginning of Borderlands 4. I’m LOVE IT!”

Elsewhere, developer Palworld Pocket Pair, currently embroiled in a patent infringement lawsuit with Nintendo, has confirmed a Game Awards appearance, promising fans: “You won’t want to miss this!” And it will probably come as no surprise to learn that Hideo Kojima will also be present at this year’s show, his appearance alongside host and pal Geoff Keighley now almost as inevitable as the sun going down. But what can he reveal? Death Stranding 2 release date? A little more about his intriguing OD horror game for Xbox? Only time and perhaps a 45-minute segment of the show will tell.

The Game Awards 2024 will air this Friday 13 December at 1am UK time, but keen fans can tune in half an hour earlier if they fancy a quick pre-show. The 2023 event went on until dawn, so if you’re a sane person who values your sleep, you can always catch up at a more opportune time thanks to Eurogamer’s coverage.
