Developer Tomoki Fukushima has announced the official launch of Sphere Defense, a new tower defense game where, as the name suggests, you defend a sphere (essentially the Earth) from relentless waves of enemies.

Now, before you dismiss this as just another run-of-the-mill tower defense time-waster, what gives it some flair that livens things up are the minimalistic visuals and sparkling neon lights. However, the goal of Sphere Defense is still, as in its genre, to strategize how best to place towers and units to repel incoming attacks.

Each successful position rewards you with useful resources, which you can then use to strengthen your units until you score a sweet, sweet victory. Of course, as you progress through the levels, the challenges become increasingly difficult – and if you manage to complete the levels without getting hit, you’ll be able to score high and get full bragging rights.

“This game was developed as a tribute to geoDefense, a tower defense game created over 10 years ago by David Whatley. When I played geoDefense, I was deeply impressed by how such a simple game could be so fun and beautiful. “ says the developer.
