In this hand-drawn game you can control a tram carrying cats.
Some games are big, sprawling adventures that require the player to spend hundreds of hours, while others are small, bite-sized experiences. Short trip undoubtedly the latter; it can be made in about five minutes, despite taking five years to create. Creator Alexandre Perrin describes the game as an “interactive illustration” and sees the player driving a tram for silly bipedal cats through picturesque mountain villages.
Short trip can be played in free form or in “scheduled” mode. Your scheduled playthrough syncs with your computer’s clock to create a schedule, and your goal is to arrive on time so that all those cats can get to work on time. Developer Alexander Perrin previously released an earlier version Short trip for free; The final product can be picked up for just a couple of dollars.
While the visuals are obvious, I was also soothed and relaxed while playing by the sound of the tram rumbling along the tracks and the soft meows of passengers saying goodbye. It’s a small, simple pleasure to live in this world for a few minutes here and there.
This is the type of game that serves as a great palette cleanser at the end of the day or after watching some massive open world RPG. Sometimes I want an intense experience where I have to adapt my roster of multiple characters to take on end-game bosses… and sometimes I want nothing more than to be a simple driver of a tram full of cats, ringing a bell so the next station knows that I’m already on my way.
