PUBG Mobile goes to the cloud with PUBG Mobile Cloud
- PUBG Mobile goes to the cloud!
- A new cloud version of the popular battle royale is now in soft launch for the US and Malaysia.
- This allows you to play without downloading or running any local programs.
Cloud gaming seems to be all the rage these days as it can be played with high fidelity almost anywhere and on any device. Xbox’s new “This is Xbox” ad campaign is evidence of this, but Krafton is taking an interesting new approach with the debut of PUBG Mobile Cloud.
PUBG Mobile Cloud, downloadable separately on Google Play, bills itself as a version without the hardware limitations, overheating issues, or any other technical limitations you’d expect. It’s currently only in soft launch in the US and Malaysia, but I wouldn’t be surprised if it becomes available to the rest of the world very soon.
And for those of you who have a cozy rock you live under, cloud gaming is essentially playing through a remote server without downloading or running any actual programs on your device. Essentially, something else is doing the work. So what does this mean for PUBG?
Wider coverage
This is an interesting move as one of the key advantages and benefits of cloud gaming is that it is usually part of a larger subscription or service. But PUBG Mobile Cloud appears to be designed as a standalone product that can be enjoyed by an even wider range of players.
The only problem I see is that the PUBG Mobile Cloud page still lists a fairly wide range of requirements. But I think the main audience for something like this will be players whose phones don’t support the popular battle royale game at all.
Will it find a place? I’m willing to bet there must be some niche for this, but I’ll be damned if I can think of anything.
