Marvel Rivals mods are extremely popular, despite the risk of bans
Passion for Marvel Rivals so powerful that people are willing to risk their accounts to turn Iron Man into Vegeta and Mantis into a goth in fishnets. So many people are uploading their own skins and performance tweaks to NexusMods that Marvel Rivals competes with Skyrim And Cyberpunk 2077 for the most popular PC mods this month.
Anyone using these mods could be banned as they technically violate the game’s terms of use, which prohibit “cheats, automation software (bots), hacks, mods, or any other unauthorized third party software.” In December, NetEase warned players Marvel Rivals Discord claims that changing the game’s files “may cause unexpected problems” after players discovered a way to adjust graphics settings that is not present in the game.
When asked if the company would take action against players who use mods, NetEase told Polygon: “It is not recommended to modify any game files as this carries the risk of being banned.” However, so far we have not seen any reports of players being punished for using mods.
The most popular mod at the moment is the mod manager. Over 88,000 people have downloaded MerryJoyKey’s Mod Manager for Marvel Rivals to simplify the whole process. Right behind it is a mod that supposedly improves the game’s performance and has been downloaded over 66,000 times. And then there’s Vegeta as Iron Man, a mod that does exactly what it says on the tin. The mod’s creator, Leonaura, also transformed Iron Fist into Goku. You’d think this would trigger clips of these two fighting like it was an episode Dragon Ball Zbut mods are only visible in your version of the game.
Despite Marvel Rivals has a large number of skins for a game that hasn’t been out for over a month, the overwhelming number of cosmetic mods shows that people are hungry for more – even if there’s a chance they could get them into trouble. But I also doubt NetEase will ever turn Luna Snow into Hatsune Miku, so someone had to do it.
