Marvel Rivals Just Stopped Mod Support With Its New Update
Immediately after the start of the first season on Friday, players began asking questions in Marvel Rivals Discord why their mods don’t work. It turns out that the game now scans its files to see if they’ve been tampered with using a feature called asset hash checking. Anything it doesn’t recognize simply won’t work.
“It’s possible, although unlikely, that a workaround can be found, and I’ll let everyone here know if/when it happens.” – MerryJoyKey, creator Marvel Rivals mod manager at NexusMods, wrote in a comment today. They have delayed updates to their mod until a solution is found.
NetEase did not warn players about the change, and it was not in the Season 1 patch notes. The only statement the studio has made regarding mods came on Wednesday, when it told Polygon: “It is not recommended to modify any game files as doing so carries the risk of being banned.”
There have been no reports yet that anyone has been punished. According to the game’s terms of use, mods were never allowed and could always get you banned, but that still didn’t stop players from using them. Over the past few weeks, thousands of people have shared and downloaded mods on NexusMods, enough to compete with them. Skyrim And Cyberpunk 2077 in the list of games with the best mods of the month. Custom skins based on US Presidents Donald Trump, Joe Biden and Barack Obama were removed by the site as part of its rules against mods “concerning socio-political issues in the United States.”
Competitive online multiplayer games tend to take a hard stance towards mods. In some cases, they may change the game in a way that gives players an unfair advantage, such as removing geometry from the map. Marvel Rivals mods didn’t go that far and most were pretty tame, but it’s possible they could get out of hand over time.
Now players will have to dress up their favorite heroes the old-fashioned way and save up enough money to buy skins in the store. The era of Iron Man Vegeta and Iron Fist Goku seems to be sadly over.
