Path of Exile 2 Developers Agree The Ending Is “Too Harsh”

Despite Path of Exile 2 will be a little more lenient in a patch coming later this week, developers at Grinding Gear Games aren’t sure how easy it is to create post-campaign dungeons.

The most common complaints will be addressed in this week’s 0.1.1 update: monsters will leave behind fewer deadly explosions, and endgame bosses will be able to be encountered more than once. Item quality will also be improved, which should help players survive the campaign and create more powerful character builds as they reach the game’s toughest dungeons.

But the punishment for dying in the final dungeon or on the map does not change yet. Cards will still kick you out after one death, losing all the time and materials you put into them, as well as some of your experience to advance to the next level. Hours of progress can disappear in the blink of an eye, and anyone not interested will have to wait much longer for a solution.

Grinding Gear Games’ Jonathan Rogers and Mark Roberts were asked on Sunday by streamers Darth Microtransaction and GhazzyTV if players would ever be able to retry a map after dying. “I feel like there has to be a certain level of failure in the game that (is) possible,” Rodgers said. He explained that the experience penalty is intended to communicate to players that they may not be ready for more challenging maps. “But I mean, maybe that’s the wrong way to look at it, I’m not sure.”

“There are several axes, and I think they are too harsh when you put them all together,” Roberts added. He believes that the transition from the game’s focused campaign to the dungeon creation endgame is too difficult for most people and needs to be smoothed out. “But I certainly need to think about it a lot more, get a little more analytics and really see what the real problems are.”

The developers stated that multiple factors contribute to this issue and that the team regularly discusses how to resolve it. In the meantime, however, they want to see how the new patch performs and focus on the major class balance changes that will come after it. The studio plans to start a new league (read: season) while the game is still in Early Access, giving players the opportunity to create new characters and test out new features. The first league, expected to arrive soon, will come with a major update to the game and possibly some of its unreleased classes.
