Sovereign Syndicate’s Disco Elysium-inspired steampunk RPG is getting a director’s cut
In 2021, less than two years after release, Disco Elysium received a Final Cut update. In addition to adding four quests, two songs, and some additional illustrations and animations, the entire game was fully voice-acted, which attracted audiences put off by the amount of reading that Disco Elysium initially required. Sovereign Syndicate, a steampunk CRPG that quietly released a year ago, is planning something similar.
Sovereign Syndicate is set in a version of Victorian London, where creatures from mythology walk the streets and steam-powered airships fly overhead. In it, you play as several main characters who have to solve many mysteries, such as finding out the identity of a murderous courtesan and searching for missing orphans. Each of the three main characters has skills that interfere with the flow of narrative and dialogue, and this is where it most closely resembles Disco Elysium.
At Sovereign Syndicate’s anniversary celebration, developer Crimson Herring explained that the studio is currently working on a fully voice-acted director’s cut, which will also feature some new quality of life options and “extra comics” for the fight scenes. These scenes, which play out in sequential art, double as Sovereign Syndicate’s combat system, although they use the same skill system as the rest of the game, which is based on tarot cards rather than dice.
Elsewhere in this post they also mention working on additional localizations, including “Turkish, Spanish and Brazilian Portuguese” and possibly others, as well as console ports “with the intention of bringing the game to Xbox, PlayStation and Nintendo” . Change platform in 2025.”
The Sovereign Syndicate director’s cut is currently slated for release in either late 2025 or early 2026. And, as explained on the Steam forum, “the Director’s Cut update will be free for owners of the original.”
