Back 2 Back wants to bring co-op shooting and driving mode to mobile devices

  • Back 2 Back from Two Frogs Games has an ambitious lead
  • Want to play a couch co-op game on your phone?
  • How does Back 2 Back cope with this challenge and can it be successful?

The sofa cooperative today seems like one of the relics of a distant past. When it comes to being able to play online remotely from virtually anywhere, it feels like the days of sitting in front of a split-screen while playing a gunfight or fighting a fighting game are long gone; but The Games of Two Frogs seems to disagree.

They’ve come to us with the ambitious news that they’ve released what they call a “two-player co-op mobile game” in the form of Back 2 Back. Billed as ideal for fans of co-op games like It Takes Two or Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes, it sees both players taking on different roles that they need to switch between.

While one player is in charge of the driving, the other takes on the shooting job as you guide the vehicle of your choice through a dense obstacle course of rocks, lava, and worse. Meanwhile, your co-pilot must fight off enemies trying to interfere with your trip.

Yes

Simple but effective(?)

My first thought when I saw “Back 2 Back” was probably the same thing you’re thinking right now. That’s good, but can it really work? After all, the biggest advantage of a mobile phone – portability – is also its biggest disadvantage, since a smaller screen is already problematic for one player, let alone two.

Well, luckily, Two Frog Games has sort of got you covered. It’s a little confusing how Back 2 Back actually works, but my understanding is that both players use their phone to manage the shared session. It’s not the most elegant solution, but it works.

I’m optimistic about Back 2 Back’s chances. If Jackbox has taught me anything, it’s that the joy of playing with friends in the same room has never faded.
