Review: Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Rewind Rita – Disappointing

It’s complicated No worry when loading Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Rewind Rita and hear the nostalgic guitar riffs of the theme song. The game starts by sending the gang back to the 90s and then jumps straight into action, flipping and fighting their way through waves of patrolmen created by iconic villain Rita Repulsa. The Rangers – or ranger if you’re playing solo – fight their way through a sandy valley and some rooftops before boarding a speeder and taking out the bad guys in a chase through a canyon in the first few levels. This all leads to the first big battle, in which the Rangers transform their vehicles into the Megazord. What should have been a massive battle is actually just a watered down, time-complicated version Punch-out!! – a big disappointment that continues until the end of the game.

This is not it Rewind Rita it’s bad, but the good points are limited to the repetitive side-scrolling levels that shine largely because of the nostalgia for the genre and franchise. The locations and graphics are stunning recreations of iconic locations from the series, but ultimately the locations lack variety: enemies and move sets are limited, and unfortunately there’s very little development for the speeder. chase and Megazord fight. Although Digital Eclipse releases in 2022 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge felt alive and buzzing, Rewind Rita feels slow and dated – it lacks the iteration or depth expected from a reimagining of the 1994 classic. Shredder’s Revengewas also a modern take on the classic TMNT brawler, with mechanically interesting combat and a variety of enemies; Rewind Ritait seems clumsy in comparison. It is this comparison that can be harmful Rewind Rita: I came to this experience expecting an evolution of the classics, as in the case of Shredder’s Revengebut what Digital Eclipse has created is more like what it was like to play a 16-bit action game back in the day. It doesn’t feel like a game made in 2024.

If you’re looking for a simple experience that’s truly reminiscent of the past, you’ll likely be more interested Rewind Rita. In this case, you’re in for a nostalgic treat: the colorful world is full of references and grotesque enemies you’ll remember, like Chunky Chicken and Turkey Jerk. The best parts Rewind Rita is the aesthetic of the environment and its characters, and the vision of where the game will take you next. A big “change” from other brawling games is the Time Breaker that putties sometimes carry onto the battlefield. It has a timer on it, and if it’s not destroyed before it self-destructs, the timeline will rewind briefly – meaning you’ll have to fight all the bad guys you’ve already defeated again. However, this does not add much complexity or meaning – it simply fills time.
And maybe the Digital Eclipse team needed this: Rewind Rita It took just over two hours to win. It’s not much shorter than Shredder’s Revengebut repetition made everything flow together. Rewind Rita ends up relying too heavily on nostalgia, creating something perhaps too close to the SNES game it draws from rather than evolving the genre for greater depth.

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Rewind Rita was released December 10 on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Windows PC and Xbox One.
