Microsoft is reportedly making a “small” number of further layoffs across its divisions, including its gaming divisions.

Microsoft has reportedly made another round of layoffs, this time affecting a “small” number of employees spanning the Security, Experience and Devices, Sales and Gaming divisions.

The news was reported by Business Insider, which, citing “people familiar with the matter,” said the affected employees were notified of the layoffs on Tuesday. A Microsoft spokesperson told the publication that a “small” number of cuts had been made, but did not specify the number. It also said the move is unrelated to recent job cuts aimed at underperforming employees.

The news follows several rounds of layoffs at Microsoft over the past year. In January 2024, the company announced it was cutting 1,900 jobs in its gaming division, with a further 650 cuts to follow in September. Eurogamer understands that the latest layoffs at Microsoft have affected a small number of employees dedicated to games, but that division has not been the focus.

When asked to comment on the Business Insider report, a Microsoft spokesperson told Eurogamer: “Organizational and personnel changes are a necessary and regular part of managing our business. We will continue to prioritize and invest in strategic growth areas for our future and to support our customers and partners.”

The latest layoffs at Microsoft follow a devastating year for the gaming industry in 2024, when some 13,000 employees are believed to have lost their jobs. These layoffs continued into the new year, with multiple job cuts reported amid studio closures. Last year, Chris Dring gave Eurogamer his thoughts on why these layoffs are happening.
