Nintendo reveals what it thinks is the “best direction” for Switch 2
Nintendo believes the “best direction” for Switch 2 is to provide players with the “opportunity to play existing Nintendo Switch software on its successor.”
In the absence of any other studio confirming that they are developing games for the Switch 2, Game File asked Nintendo to clarify which third-party developers it is working with. The answer didn’t really address the issue at hand, but did provide some insight into Nintendo’s view of backwards compatibility.
“Nintendo Switch is played by many consumers, and we decided that the best direction would be to allow consumers to play their already purchased Nintendo Switch software on a successor Nintendo Switch,” the company said.
“As a result of this approach, Nintendo Switch 2 supports exclusive games for Nintendo Switch 2, as well as both physical and digital games for Nintendo Switch.
“Some Nintendo Switch games may not be supported or fully compatible with Nintendo Switch 2. Details will be posted on the Nintendo website at a later date.”
It’s still unclear what “may not be fully compatible” means or which games won’t make the list. But this statement at least hints that Nintendo is acutely aware of the importance of backwards compatibility for players moving between the Switch and Switch 2. While the Switch was not backwards compatible with the Wii or Wii U, the Wii U was backwards compatible with Wii games, just as the Nintendo 3DS could also work with DS cartridges.
Here’s everything we know about the Nintendo Switch 2. Finally, this week, after months of rumors, leaks and speculation, it was finally revealed: the first trailer shows off the design of the console, which is larger than its predecessor, its updated dock and the first game introduced for the system is the all-new Mario Kart.
